The guys at Frictional Games have posted a follow up to theirĀ Penumbra Collection sale from last weekend, and the news is that it was a success. Due to the blog, the Slashdot article about the blog, Linux and Mac sites posting of the PR we ended up with an excellent weekend of chaos. Because of this we are now as good as set to focus completely on making the next game, which is great compared to spending most of the day working on survival solutions. There's no official word on sales figures, but Jens posted this on the Frictional Games forum: during this month we sold almost as many copies of the game as we have done in total during Mars 2007 to June 2009. And for those interested in the eternal Windows vs Linux vs Mac wars: some sort of estimate would be that Windows is 90% of the units and linux 6% with the mac at 4%. It's great to see that the "little guys", Linux and Mac, have given Frictional Games a much needed financial injection that will allow them to finish their next game, Unknown. Lets hope Frictional can get the word out about their new game when it's released, so the people that want the game, actually know about the game. In related news, there's a new commercial, native Linux game on the way in the form of Heroes of Newerth by S2 Games. It's still early days since S2 have only just started a closed beta for the Linux and Windows versions, but based on the response they've been getting at Phoronix, where the news was announced, there's a big demand for native Linux ports. Kudos to the guys at S2 for making the effort of creating a Linux port, but please, learn from the mistakes (and subsequent success) of Frictional and don't let Heroes of Newerth die a slow death after launch, since it will only perpetuate the myth that there are no gamers on Linux! blog comments powered by Disqus |
